Preserving Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s legacy and
maintaining the architectural integrity of his buildings at Illinois
Institute of Technology. One of the most influential architects
of the twentieth century and director of IIT’s College of Architecture
for 20 years, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe expressed his modernist vision
in the IIT campus, which he designed in the 1940s and 1950s. As
the steward of Mies' legacy, IIT is committed to restoring his masterworks,
beginning with two core buildings: S.R. Crown Hall, a National Historic
Landmark and home to IIT’s College of Architecture; and Wishnick
Hall, the university’s original chemistry building.
Enhancing educational programs for our students.
Using the flexible and modular plan created by Mies, his buildings
will be transformed to meet the needs of current students; to provide
opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary partnerships;
and to support IIT’s unique new educational programs.
Reinforcing Chicago’s international reputation for
architectural distinction. The IIT campus is a showcase
for the design solutions that Mies and his followers pioneered—solutions
that transformed the city spaces and skylines of the world. Enthusiasts
of modern architecture from across the globe have long been attracted
to the Mies campus. The revitalization of Mies' works, an increasingly
vibrant Bronzeville community, and bold new campus buildings designed
by Rem Koolhaas and Helmut Jahn will enhance tourism at IIT and
heighten Chicago’s civic pride in this world-renowned architectural
destination. The Mies van der Rohe Society seeks to raise $20 million in the
first phase to revitalize two core Mies buildings. Fundraising will
continue to restore the rest of Mies' masterpieces at IIT, including
Alumni Memorial Hall, Siegel Hall, Perlstein Hall, and the Robert
F. Carr Chapel.
